The first requirement for this setup is a USB serial cable (serial over USB) which is capable of returning serial number.
TIP: look for cables marked as "ChromeOS compatible":
Also note that for Tizen displays it is necessary to have compatible RS232 display adapter cable - to easily identify a correct cable check the number of pins.
Steps
In signageOS Box
- Get the hexadecimal format for connected cable. Navigate to the following page in Box: https://box.signageos.io/chromeos-provisioning
- Connect the cable to your PC via USB port.
- Press "Request devices" [1]
- Copy the Hexadecimal format [2] of your cable for later use
In Google Admin Console
Once you have retrieved information about the cable you can set up the connection in your Google Admin page.
This step is mandatory to auto-allow usage of the USB serial cable without additional user prompts. This configuration has to be done for every type/model of the USB serial cable.
-
- In Google Admin Console navigate to Main Menu → Devices → Chrome
- In Chrome section go to Settings → Select your Organization Unit [1] → Device Settings tab [2] → Web Serial API allowed devices (In Kiosk section) [4]
- Click on "Edit in Legacy view"
- Please note: Make sure that you edit the correct Organization unit in Google Admin, otherwise this setting can be overwritten by the child Organization unit in settings. You should always set this in the Organization unit where your devices are assigned to.
- Put two new settings into these fields:
- URL: 2.signageos.io
- VID:PID (Vendors IDs: Product ID): Insert the Hexadecimal format value copied from Box (ChromeOS provisioning page) or your specific IDs. Ex. 067B:23A3.
- Navigate to Chrome → Settings → Organization unit [1] → User & Browser settings tab [2] → Web Serial API (in Hardware section) [3]
- Fill in the “Allow the Web Serial API on these sites” text field with → “*.signageos.io” and Save.
NOTE: Setting up third-party applications
If you want to control the external display while using a different application/address, (ie. Yahoo.com), make sure the correct full address is added in this field. It is recommended to check the address first to avoid redirects, consent popups etc. which would result in loss control over the external display.
On Display Configuration
The last step is to configure the display you connect with the ChromOS device and enable its management over a serial cable.
Samsung
- On the remote control for Samsung display press Home -> Go to ID settings - Device ID 0
- Select PC Connection cable rs232C
- Connect the ChromeOS device to display with the cable and Serial-to-jack cable
- Power cycle the display
- Power cycle the connected ChromeOS device
ChromeOS device should be now connected to your Samsung display. You can verify the connection in the remote desktop console.
